Discover the ultimate guide to understanding the varieties of doodle breeds, including F1, F1B, and F2, from the experts at
The Doodle Tribe.

Doodle breeds have become increasingly popular in recent years, and among the most popular are the Goldendoodle and Newfypoos. However, these breeds have different variations, including F1, F1B, and F2. In this blog, we will explore the differences between these breeds and what makes each one unique.

First, define what F1, F1B, and F2 mean. These terms refer to the variations of the doodle breed. F1 is the first generation, meaning the dog is a cross between a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle or a Newfoundland and a Poodle. F1B results from breeding an F1 doodle with a purebred Poodle, making them 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever or Newfoundland for example. F2 is the result of breeding two F1 doodles together. Thus, F1, F1B, and F2 are terms commonly used to describe different varieties of hybrid dogs.

F1 Goldendoodle:

An F1 hybrid is the first-generation offspring of two purebred dogs from different breeds. For example, if you breed a purebred Poodle with a purebred Golden Retriever, the resulting puppies would be F1 hybrids. For example, a Goldendoodle is an F1 breed because it is the offspring of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. F1 dogs are often bred to take advantage of the desirable traits of both parent breeds, such as intelligence, trainability, or hypoallergenic qualities.

F1b Goldendoodle:

An F1B hybrid results from breeding an F1 hybrid with a purebred dog. For example, if you breed an F1 Goldendoodle (Poodle x Golden Retriever) with a purebred Poodle, the resulting puppies would be F1B Goldendoodles. An F1B Goldendoodle would result from breeding a Goldendoodle with a Poodle. F1B dogs are often bred to enhance specific traits or characteristics of one of the parent breeds while maintaining the desirable traits of the other.

F1 vs F1b vs F2

F2 Doodle:

An F2 hybrid is the second generation of a hybrid dog. This is the result of breeding two F1 hybrids together. This means an F2 breed is two generations removed from the original purebred dogs. F2 breeds can have a wider range of characteristics and traits than F1 or F1B breeds because they are less predictable due to the increased genetic diversity.

The primary difference between these generations is the amount of genetic variability and predictability. F1 hybrids are usually the most variable in appearance and temperament because they are the first-generation offspring of two different breeds. F1B hybrids tend to be more predictable in appearance and temperament because they have a greater proportion of one of the parent breeds. Depending on the specific genetics involved, F2 hybrids can be more or less variable than F1 hybrids.

Each Doodle breed has unique traits and characteristics, and it’s essential to research and understand these differences before choosing the right doodle breed for your family. It’s important to note that while these classifications can help understand the breeding of hybrid dogs, they don’t necessarily guarantee specific traits or characteristics in every individual dog. The specific genetic makeup of each dog can vary, even within the same litter. It’s always important to do your research and choose a responsible breeder, like The Doodle Tribe, who prioritizes the health and well-being of their dogs over profit.
