5 tips for new Goldendoodle owners

There are ways you’ll need to prepare your home and your schedule when bringing a Goldendoodle into your family. Here are 5 tips for new Goldendoodle owners

About Goldendoodles:

Goldendoodles are an adorable mix between a Golden Retriever and Poodle. They are incredibly playful and energetic. Goldendoodles can also have calm temperaments like Golden Retrievers, making them great family pets. Gaining a new family member in a Goldendoodle is fun and exciting for the whole family, but it can also be overwhelming without research, planning, and patience.

1. Feeding tips for Goldendoodles:

As puppies, Goldendoodles should be fed 3-5 times per day (if you’re putting them on a schedule), or allowed to free-feed as needed throughout the day. Free feeding encourages healthy eating habits and since Goldendoodles are so active, owners shouldn’t worry about over-eating. After one year, a puppy can slowly transition from puppy food to adult food. The transition should last about 7 to 10 days. Using this method will avoid stomach issues in your pup.

2. Bathing and grooming your Goldendoodle:

Bathing your dog is a significant part of their grooming routine. Goldendoodles tend to have more sensitive skin, so bathing once a month is suggested to keep their skin from drying out. It is also important to brush a Goldendoodle before they receive a bath.

3. Potty training for Goldendoodles:

It can take several weeks to successfully potty train a Goldendoodle puppy. Oftentimes, it can take three to four weeks. Some of the following suggestions may help along your potty training journey:

Keep your Goldendoodle close by:

By doing this, you can keep a closer eye on your puppy’s potty behaviors and avoid them peeing indoors.

Give your Goldendoodle commands:

As your Goldendoodle starts relieving him/herself outside, form a habit by saying “go, pee” or “go, poop.” They will start to connect these words with the action of relieving themselves. Remember to use the same commands every time, to reinforce the behavior.

4. Socializing your Goldendoodle:

Goldendoodles are a social breed and enjoy being around people and other dogs. Here are a few tips to help socialize your puppy.

Start socializing your puppy early:

It’s necessary to create positive experiences to help your dog stay friendly, confident, and happy at an early age.

Regular social activity:

Daily walks or playing sessions are a great way to keep your Goldendoodle connected with other pets and new people.

5. Playing tips for Goldendoodles:

Goldendoodles can be more active compared with other breeds. They love to play whether it’s fetch, tug-of-war, hide-and-seek or other games. Since the breed comes from two water dogs, they especially love water activities. Goldendoodles require at least 20-30 minutes of daily exercise.
